Nessus was a centaur who had fought in the battle of the Lapiths. After the fight, he fled to the Euenos river and became a ferryman. Everything was fine for a number of years, until, one day, Heracles and his third wife Deianira came to the river. Zoom sur l’oeuvre.

Nessus was a centaur who had fought in the battle of the Lapiths. After the fight, he fled to the Euenos river and became a ferryman.

Heracles asked Nessus to carry his wife across the river and, when they were safely across the river, his animal nature got the best of Nessus and he tried to kidnap Deianira. Heracles heard his wife’s screams and saw what Nessus was doing, shooting the centaur with an arrow poisoned with the blood of the Lernaean Hydra.
